What are people's opinions of the 5-21-74 Playing in the Band? 46 minutes of bliss? Or 20 minutes too long?

Alright, I was waiting til I had a chance to hear the whole thing before I commented. I wouldn't call it bliss, but I think it justifies its length. There is a lot of atonality in this Playin', but some shimmery melodic moments too. And Billy K. is taking names and kicking ass throughout. Jerry does some great Tigering too (thanks, HE LIVE'S for hipping me to that term), along with the more serious weirdness. The crowd seems into it, and that's just on the SBD...

Jerry seems to be the engine-driver here, he just won't let up, but Phil is doing all kinds of weird things. I think it's the longest non-thematic jam they ever did, and it really goes out there into jazz-fusion land - usually in their '74 out-of-nowhere jams they'd hang their hats on a familiar melody sooner or later, but not here! Notice how a few times they get quiet and then build up to a climax - they indirectly find a direction in the jam, and contrast prettiness with atonal madness, which keeps things interesting and makes it seem shorter than it is.
It's probably better heard in the audience version:

It's funny how you said "seem shorter than it is," because when I was listening, and it returned to the vocal part of the song, I was thinking: "That was NEVER 45 minutes!?!?!" :)

you can never get enough playin can you? If I remember I think that 7-21 or 24 ( I forget which ) is much weirder and out there fwiw.

Personally I think playin was the bands best jam vehicle bar none. I love Dark Star of course but bringing it back it just wasn't the same.

I prefer the Viola Lee Blues' from early '68. Pure raw energy. Those long Palyin's are great when I have my headphones on and want to catch a few zzz's.
